South-Indian restaurants in Japan

There are many Indian restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. And, I guess there will be at least one Indian restaurant in any cities of Japan. But, South-Indian cuisine is still very uncommon in Japan.

Somehow, we found a few South-Indian restaurants in Tokyo. So, I'll list up for you South-India lovers :-)

new entry! Daba India, 2003 June

*Ganesh, 045-814-0711 Zisutasu Bldg 2F, 4-1-6 Ryokuen, Izumi-ku, Kanagawa

11:30 - 22:00, closed on wednesday (if holiday, on next day)
No reservations accepted at Saturday, Sunday after 17:30.
Childs are friendly welcomed.

Serving mini-meals (1250yen) for lunch (11:30-14:00) daily without reservation.
Indian-vegetarian style. Sambar, Rassam, Raita, Chutney, Achar, Pickle, Papad, Rice, Podi, Ghee.
'Mini' means no refill. (you can order another rice for 250yen)

This fabulous Nouvelle Indian restaurant is situated quite far from Tokyo. But definitely worth a visit. The owner Ishihara-san is not only a good chef, but an artist of Indian cuisine. His special dishes (most are on a reservation basis only) are very Indian taste but using some Japanese vegetables/fishes and served like a French cuisine (not like an haute cuisine though). Elegant, Fragrant, Light...

This winter's spécialté are fish biryani and nandu masala (crab curry). I think you can eat these dishes without reservation, but not sure (I'll ask him later). You can't miss!

How can I get there?
One hour trip from central tokyo by train. First, go to Yokohama station by any method. Second, take the Soutetsu line to Futamatagawa station. Third, change here for the Soutetsu-Izumino line to Ryokuen-toshi station. Then walk past a police-box and a post office. Go up stairs to 2F. Voila! Ganesh is there on the right.

*Balthazar Cafe, 03-3331-0522
Hobbit Mura 2F, 3-15-3 Nishi-ogi-minami Suginami-ku Tokyo

Mon,Wed,Thu 12:00-23:00 Fri,Sat 12:00-24:00 Sun,Hol 12:00-22:30 Tue Closed

WATANABE has quited Balthazar. So, no more Indian food can be served here...

Meals(veg. or non-veg.) are served on reservation basis only (for 2 or more persons).
Dal, Sambar, Rassam, Poriyal, Kootu, Pickle, Chutney, Podi...
Free refill (until foods are empty).

They have Japanese foods and Belgian beers also. Sounds fishy? Do not worry. South-Indian foods are cooked by WATANABE Akira who wrote books about South-Indian foods. So very genuine and tasty.

They serve Sambar and Rassam daily without reservation. And this venue is near from Nishi-ogikubo station. So you can eat South-Indian foods after work.

*Daba India, 03-3272-7160
Sagami Bldg 1F, 2-7-9 Yaesu Chuo-ku

Closed on Sunday.

Serving Meals (Non-veg 2000yen, Veg 1900yen) and Dosas on daily basis!

Few minutes walk from Tokyo station and one minute walk from Kyobashi subway station. This roomy comfortable place serves one of the best south-Indian food regular basis in Japan. If you have not experienced south-Indian food yet, you could try easier at this place. Also this place is must for every south-Indian food lovers:-)

Here are the photos of dishes which we took.

I am an Indian Specialityy Cook in Tandoori & Mughalai Dishes, since 1980.I spent 8 years in Jeddah-Saudia Arabia but had to come back because of death of my father.
I am presently working in Delhi and now I would like to share my talent and expertise of this fantastic food with the japanese people.
Just give me a chance.

I love Daba India, the south Indian restaurant above and have been going there since it opened. But have you tried Old Delhi in Ginza? Here is the URL: http://www.old-delhi.co.jp/ (03 3535-0021) It is as good or better than Daba. The chef worked for a 5 star hotel in New Delhi before coming to Japan.

I believe two restaurants are the best Indian restaurants in Japan that I have tried. The rest are at best just fair and mostly pretty bad.

Posted by: Pamela on November 10, 2003 04:10 PM

Hi, thanks for a comment!
I've never tried Old Delhi yet, I will try.

If you liked Daba India, you will definitely like Ganesh too. But its far from Tokyo...

I agree with most of Indian restaurants are quite dull. Menus are same, tastes are same too.
If there are more variety, or serve some classy thali set, it will be much more enjoyable.

New Indian Restaurant chain "ARPAN" presently in Roppongi and Mycal Honmoku, Yokohama. It has different taste then others, with combination of food from South India, North India and many other special dishes, which generally are preffered by Indian families.

This restaurant does not have a customize taste to Japanese only, but serves real Indian taste, which you can find in a family in India (better you tell how you want to eat to the chef when you order).

I think most foreigners including many Japanese do find this restaurant the best choice for South & North Indian food. Masala Dosa starts at 780 Yen. Try Roppongi ARPAN if you are in the area. Some details can be found at http://www.indojin.com

Posted by: Yogesh Sharma on January 24, 2004 01:14 PM

Hi Yogesh!
Thanks for recommendation.

Actually, now I'm working at Roppongi. So I tried ARPAN today. Dal (700yen), Rassam (300yen) and Basmati (500yen) were quite nice and tasty. Yet I think the dinner menu is bit less exciting than tea-time menu. But the floor manager said that lots of new entries are coming on Feb. So I will revisit next week!

thanks and best regards

Posted by: Venkataramanan on March 19, 2005 03:43 PM

There is a south Indian restaurant called "A.Raj". Phone 03-3981-9688

And you will find some north Indian restaurants there in Ikebukuro. I think there is no pure-veg restaurant in Ikebukuro. But ofcourse every place will serve veg dishes, such as Dhal, Al gobi, etc..

If you go out of Ikebukuro area, you can try Nataraj pure veg. restautants.

Unfortunately I don't know any Indian grocery stores in Kyushu area. Anyway you can shop Indian rices or anything on the Web. These two shops are quite popular amongst Indian engineers in Japan.

I don't know how often you still update this, but this came up as the #1 result when searching for "indian food japan," so maybe others will get some use out of the comments. ;o)

I recently moved to Tokushima prefecture (on Shikoku, the smallest of the 4 main islands) to work as an English teacher via the JET Programme. The JR Tokushima train station (in Tokushima-shi, in a multistory building called Clement Plaza) has a restaurant on the 5th floor called Masala--their vegetarian options were sort of slim so I can't vouch for their cuisine in general (and the veggie curry I got was all right), but it's mainly north Indian cuisine. The naan is incredible, though...it's made right there in the restaurant.

Namaskar

I will be moving to Osaka for a couple of years on business. I am trying to do some homework around logistics & neccessities

i would very much be grateful to get the names where indian grocery stores & may be familiers or communities that live in & around that area.

thanks and best regards

Hi,
There is a new South Indian restaurant in Tokyo!
Nirvanam,a beautiful place and excellent food.I have tried all the south Indian restaurants and personally I rate them the best. They have a lunch buffet as well.It is crowded and the best time would be 1.30 to 2.30.Dinner is from 6.00 to 10.00.Thali meals is available on reservation.
Ph 3433 1217.

Posted by: miyako on December 12, 2005 08:25 PM

Hi MiyakoSan,

Thanks for a good suggestion Nirvanam Restaurant in Kamiyacho. I could not believe I could get idiaaapam, aapam and stew in Tokyo these items I could not get when I travel to North India. That was my favourite breakfast when i went to Kerala last year.
Lunch buffet also good you also get Wada Sambar, but like you said if you go before 12:45 you will have to wait in the queue at least for 10 min. The second time I went they have also started serving Dosas after 1:30pm.
I have already tasted 9 items in the menu and will update after I have tasted the others.
My favourite out of the 9 items Aapam, Idiappam and Stew.

Posted by: Yamazaki on January 6, 2006 11:19 AM

NIRVANAM....the best place for South Indian Food lovers! Though they have not advertised much, it is really very good place for DOSA, VADA, PAROTA and other South Indian dishes!

The easiest land mark is Daily Yamazaki store in its first floor.

Posted by: Daibutsu on March 6, 2006 02:34 PM

Nirvaanam is near Tokyo tower; 3 min walk from KamiyaCho subway station.

They have buffet in the morning and Dosa set from 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm; First timers' set was really nice for the dinner!
